Located on an island in the Gulf, Galveston is full of water activities on its miles of beachfront throughout most of the year, including some interesting attractions like the Treasure Isle Tour Train and the Texas Seaport Museum. Other cultural activities include the Moody Mansion, Galveston Ballet and the Mardi Gras Museum.
History
Famous for being a port for privateering in the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston is
rich in naval and American history. Several important Civil War activities took
place in the town, including the famous Battle of Galveston and being the place
where Juneteenth (the celebration of the end of slavery) originated. After the
devastating hurricane of 1900, Galveston became a major tourist destination,
a reputation it holds to today, being the number one port on the Gulf coast.
While 2008's Hurricane Ike destroyed much of the infrastructure of Galveston,
a rebuilding effort has been underway and the city's tourist industry is as
strong as ever.
